Wisdom Teeth Extraction at Affinity Family Dental Muncie
Comfortable Wisdom Tooth Removal With Sedation Options
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. For some people they erupt without trouble, but for many, there simply is not enough room in the jaw. When wisdom teeth become impacted, grow in at an angle, or only partially break through the gums, they can cause pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth. At Affinity Family Dental Muncie, we offer gentle wisdom teeth extractions with sedation options, including IV sedation, to keep you comfortable from start to finish.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, but removal is often recommended when wisdom teeth:
- Are impacted (trapped under the gums or jawbone)
- Grow in sideways or at an angle and push against other teeth
- Partially erupt, creating a pocket where bacteria and food collect
- Cause repeated gum infections, swelling, or pain
- Develop cavities that are difficult to clean and treat
- Contribute to crowding or shifting of teeth after orthodontic treatment
- Lead to cysts that can damage the jawbone or nearby roots
Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Be Causing Problems
- Pain or tenderness at the back of your mouth
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums near the back teeth
- Jaw stiffness or difficulty opening your mouth
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste that will not go away
- Headaches or earaches linked to jaw discomfort
Even if you are not experiencing symptoms, regular exams and X-rays help us spot developing problems early. Removing wisdom teeth in the late teens or early twenties often leads to an easier procedure and faster recovery.
Your Wisdom Teeth Evaluation
Your visit starts with a thorough exam and digital X-rays, with 3D imaging when needed, to see the exact position of each wisdom tooth, its roots, and nearby nerves and sinuses. We will explain what we see, whether removal is recommended, and what your treatment and recovery will look like.
Sedation for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Many patients are nervous about having wisdom teeth removed. We offer local anesthesia along with nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. IV sedation is a popular choice for removing multiple or impacted wisdom teeth because it provides deep relaxation and many patients remember little of the procedure. If you choose oral or IV sedation, please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home.
Recovery Tips After Wisdom Teeth Extraction
- Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding during the first few hours.
- Apply ice packs to your cheeks for 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours.
- Eat soft, cool foods such as yogurt, smoothies (with a spoon), mashed potatoes, and soup.
- Avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing to protect the blood clot and help prevent dry socket.
- Rest and limit strenuous activity for a few days.
- Take prescribed or recommended medications exactly as directed.
- Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses after the first day, or as instructed.
Most patients feel much better within three to five days. Call our office if you have increasing pain, swelling that worsens after the third day, fever, or bleeding that will not stop.
